Hiyaaaa from Glasgow!
I'm writing to you from GloWorm Studio where we're in the middle of mixing the new trio album. We spent the last week down in Lanarkshire at Gran's House recording with the dream team of producer Anna Massie and engineer Angus Lyon. That's us just pleased as punch. I'll have more news on that front soon!
In the meantime, Fàrsan is fresh off of playing at Celtic Colours for the first time and ready to hit the road in the Northeastern US this coming week! We don't play in the ol' US of A too often so come on out and help spread the word if you can :)

Also...Childsplay will be playing its final shows this month. I've been in the band for ELEVEN years and it's hard to believe that it's all coming to an end. I've forged so many friendships in this project and I'm really proud to be part of a group that's been so influential in New England for over 30 years. Along with all the usual suspects, we're bringing back Aoife O'Donovan for a few shows and there's a rumor that Liz Carroll will come up for a tune at our finale concert at Sanders Theater :)

And that pretty much takes me up to the end of 2019 for gigs. Thank you so much for your support this year. It's been a good one and with this new album and Boston-based FIDDLE CAMP in store, 2020 is shaping up to be pretty excellent too! You'll hear from me more about camp SOON, but if you want to save the date, The Boston States Fiddle Camp will be August 16-22, 2020 :)
Fàrsan, a NEW camp, and a NEW TRIO ALBUM!!
Happy fall everyone!! Right now I'm in the midst of some cruise ship gigs, which is definitely one of the weirder things I've ever done...think dressing rooms full of sequined vests and boas. And fruit punch that no one ordered.
But in the near future, there's some much more exciting stuff coming up...Fàrsan will be touring in the Northeast of the US for the very first time in early November, and before that, we're playing at Celtic Colours in Cape Breton! Straight from there, I'm flying to Glasgow, Scotland to start working on my second album as the Katie McNally Trio. This CD will be produced by none other than the amazing Anna Massie (Blazin' Fiddles, Rant) and I can't wait for you to all hear this music.
And FINALLY...I know a LOT of you are also waiting on news about the Boston States Fiddle Camp...and this is still kind of a TEASE, but the brand-new camp will take place August 16-22, 2020 at Grotonwoods Camp in Groton, MA. I'll be sending out a follow-up email shortly with more info on the STAFF, how to register, and what else to expect!!

3. Julie Vallimont's very first solo record. Give her a lil KICK whydontcha. It's produced by Yann Falquet and has a bunch of great musical guests.
I also have some GIGS. I am SUPER excited to play with another brand-new project called APIARY that is premiering at Celtic Connections in Glasgow. It involves 3 of my favorite fiddle babes, plus my fave cello babe and guitar babe. AND...the Katie McNally Trio rides again.

See you around and happy New Year!!
Greetings from Minnesota! I'm spending the week recording a series of online Scottish fiddle lessons for the American Fiddle Method School. The complete course will include over 35 lessons encompassing a variety tunes from Scotland, Cape Breton, and Shetland. Stay tuned for our IMMINENT release!
Next weekend, I'll be teaching for the second time at Fiddle Hell alongside nearly 80 other instructors. There's still time to sign up for an amazing weekend of workshops and sessions! If you can't make it to Fiddle Hell, check out Ed Pearlman's great Fiddle Online lesson series. I've been a guest instructor twice and can't recommend Ed's program enough!
I'll wrap up the year with a couple of tours of the Northeast. Childsplay will be in Maine and Massachusetts once again with Irish singer Karan Casey. We'll be heading into the studio in January to record a new album with Karan so catch some new material and old favorites in mid-November in Bangor, Portland, and Somerville.
I'll also be reprising The Turning of the Year with Low Lily and John Whelan in early December. We had a great time last year ringing in the solstice and the holidays with songs and tunes and we're excited to expand our show over two weekends this year. Check out our dates to the right to see when we'll be in your area.
Hope to see you around soon!
I'm writing to you from my favorite coffee shop in Madison, WI (it's Colectivo if you must know) before the second week of Fiddle Pal Camp begins tomorrow. We had a great first week in Minnesota last week and before that I was on the west coast playing some gigs with an as-yet unnamed project that brings Gaelic mouth music together with Cape Breton tunes and dance :) We had a great time together and a bunch of sold-out shows so I'll let you know the next time it happens!
In case you still don't have plans for the end of the summer, I still have a couple of spots left on my Scotland Trip (which involves awesome things like private concerts, hikes, distillery tours, a Gaelic lesson, boat rides to uninhabited islands, etc.) E-mail me SOON to reserve a spot!! There's also my hometown camp, Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School, the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, and Northern Roots in Vermont.
I have just a couple of gigs in Boston next weekend during my one weekend home all summer! Come on down to celebrate Canada Day with a square dance at the Canadian-American Club OR come to Summer BCMFest in Harvard Square the next day.
It's a lovely and sunny day here and I think a walk around Lake Mendota and an afternoon Spotted Cow is calling my name...see you later!
I had my first venture into web design and I'm pretty pleased with the fresh new look of www.katiemcnally.com! Please peruse at your leisure :) I'm going to be boppin' around the Northeast this month, playing dances and sessions, but am also REALLY looking forward to that most blessed time of year...the summer...aka fiddle camp season.
If you're still making summer plans, come to Scotland with me. No, seriously!! I'm leading a trip to Scotland from July 29-August 6 with stops at music sessions, nature walks, castles, and more. E-mail me for more details!
If you'd rather stay close to home, join me at Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas' String Fling, FiddlePals Minnesota and Wisconsin, Northern Roots, Swannanoa Gathering, or the Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School.
And just to keep you entertained...my new whoopie pie blog.
I'm just back from a couple weeks in the mid-Atlantic, celebrating New Years in Philadelphia playing for the Delaware Valley RSCDS Hogmanay and teaching tunes in beautiful Shepherdstown, West Virginia at the Upper Potomac Fiddle Retreat!
I'm gearing up for my home festival this weekend in Harvard Sq—BCMFest! I'll be playing a set with Neil Pearlman at 3:15 on the Passim stage, directly after I compete in a brand-new game show hosted by Yann Falquet called "So you Thinque You can Quebecois?" I'll help wrap it all up at the Cape Breton Kitchen Party finale concert!
Looking ahead, I'll be playing a FREE concert as part of Boston College's Gaelic Roots series. Gaelic Roots got me started as a kid way back in 2003 so it's a real pleasure to be part of their programming now!
At the end of the month, I'll head back out west to the Celtic Arts Foundation's AMAAAAZING Winter School and Masters of Scottish Arts concerts at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle. Can't wait to be teaching and playing alongside my fiddle buddies Wendy MacIsaac and Troy MacGillivray, as well as Finlay MacDonald and Fred Morrison on smallpipes AND the whole highland pipe and drum crew :)
See you SOON!
The Turning of the Year
We've almost reached the end of 2016 and I'm happy to report that it's going out with an exciting new collaborative tour with American roots band Low Lily and Irish accordion champ John Whelan. Come celebrate the turning of the year with us in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts this week!
It's been my my busiest year so far in large part because of your encouragement and support. With a new album, international CD release tours, 10 fiddle camps, and loads of dances and concerts in-between, I feel so grateful and lucky to have shared 2016 with all of you.
To close out the year, I'll be playing a few shows with Low Lily and John Whelan as well as couple of dances around the country and the usual Boston Scottish Fiddle Club Session. I'll also have some down time to focus a little bit on writing new music and gearing up for an exciting 2017!
Today I was working at Dimension Sound Studio where I recorded some second fiddle on Rachel Reeds' new album. It will also feature our friends Andrea Beaton, Natalie Haas, Yann Falquet, and Hanneke Cassel. Look out for Rachel's debut sometime next year!
Another project that I've been involved with is Neil Pearlman's new podcast TradCafe which just wrapped up its first season with interviews from folk luminaries Keith Murphy, Troy MacGillivray, and Greg Liszt.
Thanks again for all your support and I'll looking forward to seeing you all next year!
New collaborations abound this month: Childsplay is back in action with Karan Casey at the helm and I'll be joining John Whelan and Low Lily on tour as well!
Sharing music, playing tunes, and being close to our communities seems more important now than ever. I'm really grateful to be spending my time this month supporting projects and institutions that are staples of the New England traditional music scene and playing with folks who feel like family. This coming Sunday I'll be playing a few sets of tunes at 7:00 pm with Troy MacGillivray and Neil Pearlman as part of the all-day benefit for the Canadian-American Club of Massachusetts. The club has served as a musical home for Canadian immigrants since 1937 and continues to preserve our diverse cultural heritage in Boston. Come on down for tunes and to help keep this venue going!
After that, I'll be diving right into rehearsals and a tour with Childsplay and Irish singer Karan Casey. I'm excited to see and play all these folks after a two year hiatus and I've written a brand-new set of tunes that we'll be premiering on tour! As a sneak-preview, I'll also be joining Low Lily and Irish accordion-player John Whelan on tour in early December all over New England. And finally, if you still haven't heard it, The Boston States is available on CDBaby, iTunes, Spotify and more. Please support all your local artists by ordering from
Music can't fix everything, but it helps bring us closer to our values and communities. It helps us see similarities across cultures and connects strangers across a crowded club or across the world. I encourage you to go to a dance, join in at a session, or take a friend out to a concert this month and celebrate each other.
Boston States CD Release Tour And MORE!
Before its nationwide release on October 21, you can join us at one of our CD release shows up and down the east coast: Burlington, VT—Hillsdale, NY—Philadelphia, PA—Washington DC, Brooklyn, NY—Belfast, ME—Epsom, NH—Somerville, MA. October=cray-cray. With a CD release tour, a contradance weekend, fiddle workshops in Maryland and New York...it's gonna be insane.
Check out the dates on the side bar tharrrr and come hang at a CD release party. You have 8 opportunities so...that's all I'm gonna say. I'll be short and to the point tonight because I have to build a new website and do some laundry and eat some toast and maybe somewhere in there I'll eventually go to bed. OH. Almost forgot. Our INTREPID pianist Neil has started a RAD new podcast called TradCafe that comes out every Wednesday. You need to check out right now. Go on, click on the link. I'll just wait here.....................

See you at one of our CD release shows somewhere on the EAST COAST!
p.s. More details later, but in November there's Fiddle Hell and Childsplay (our documentary just got syndicated to PBS so watch out for that!)
Juuuuune: new album, fiddle camps, and a gala!
By now, you all know that my new CD, The Boston States, is coming out VERY soon. In fact, it's being shipped out from the factory TOMORROW. Check back in soon for info on CD release concerts in July and October!
ASIDE from the new album, I'm really looking forward to a summer of teaching and traveling! I'm about to jump in the car to drive up to Shelburne, VT for a duo house concert tonight and follow it up with another house concert in Montréal tomorrow. After that, we're speeding back down to Watertown, MA for the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club Gala where I'll be a soloist alongside Hanneke Cassel and Ed Pearlman with the newly-formed Boston Scottish Fiddle Orchestra! Stick around for ceilidh dancing and Cape Breton sets at the Canadian-American Club.
After this busy weekend, FIDDLE CAMP SEASON begins! I'll be at Brian Wicklund's FiddlePal camps in Minnesota and Wisconsin, with a few staff concerts for you to check out. I'll be teaching alongside Brian, my fab bandmate Shauncey Ali, Natalie Padilla, Joe Walsh, and more! I'll briefly swing back through New England to give a workshop for the Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire before flying out to the American Festival of Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA where I'll be co-teaching Cape Breton fiddling with the one and only Wendy MacIsaac. I'm thrilled and honored to be on faculty alongside some of the greatest tradition-bearers North and South America have to offer.
Stay tuned for more info on how to order The Boston States and where we'll be releasing it! Happy summer, everyone :)
